SuperLookup desktop – Help

The desktop app opens each reference site in its own embedded, ad-free browser tab, and can be summoned by a global hotkey on whatever text you’ve selected. It’s the standalone companion to this website – no install, no account, and it doesn’t need Supervertaler.

Install

Download the build for your OS from the latest release. Each build is self-contained (it bundles everything, so it’s ~150–210 MB and takes a couple of seconds to start).

• Windows – unzip and run SuperLookup.exe.
• macOS – unzip and right-click → Open the first time (the build isn’t signed yet, so Gatekeeper asks once).
• Linux – unzip, chmod +x SuperLookup, and run it.

The global hotkey

• Default: Ctrl+Shift+L on Windows and Linux, ⌘⌥L on macOS. Select a term in any app (your CAT tool, a PDF, an email), press it, and SuperLookup jumps to the front already searching it.
• Change it in Settings (⚙) → Global hotkey – click the field and press your combo (it needs at least one modifier).
• SuperLookup lives in the system tray: closing the window keeps it (and the hotkey) running. Click the tray icon to bring it back, and Quit from the tray menu when you’re done.

Your searches

Open Settings (⚙) to tailor which sites appear as tabs:

• Enable / disable any search, and reorder them with ↑ / ↓.
• Add your own – a name, an icon, and a URL template with placeholders: {query}, {sl}, {tl}, {sl_full}, {tl_full}, and the source/target language format.
• Import / Export your set as JSON to back it up or share it, and Restore defaults any time.

Good to know

• Ads & trackers are blocked in every tab (an EasyList-based blocker), so the sites are cleaner than in a normal browser.
• Logins persist – sign into a site once and you stay signed in across launches.
• It remembers your last language pair.
• Sites that block being embedded still work; only your own pages can’t be shown inside a plain browser tab, which is exactly why this desktop app exists.
